"There's no gas line to the kitchen. Everything we cook, we cook over wood, and we plan the night around how the fire burns."

Chef Maren Kowalczyk opened Harrow & Hearth in an old hardware store with one brick oven and a promise to cook what the season hands her. Six years on, the oven is still the busiest cook in the room.

Maren Kowalczyk / Chef and owner

"The leeks alone are worth the trip across town. We came for a quick glass and stayed three hours."

Delphine Arsenault, Thursday regular

"Our server picked a wine I'd never have ordered. It was the best thing on the table."

Owen Takahashi, first visit in March

"Warm room, loud in the right way, and they never rushed us out."
